R.I.P Mark Lanegan

Very sad by this news of singer and musician Mark Lanegan passing.

I saw Mark Lanegan perform with Isobel Campbell few years back at the Barbican. It was an incredible gig, two amazing voices but Mark Lanegan’s voice is one of the very best ever and to hear it live was such a joy. After the gig both artists (along with support act Willy Mason) did a signing and I have a treasured signed copy of Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell’s album Hawk signed by all three. Lanegan was hunched down at the signing table, baseball cap pulled over face, like he was incredibly shy and trying to hide. After he signed the record I said my nervous and deepest thanks and as I turned to walk away, some unfound bravado come to me and I said to him “Oh I wish could fucking sing like you!”. This little smile appeared from under the baseball cap. It was great moment and a very special gig for me.

My final release of 2021 is a collection of music inspired by a visit to the National Trust Sheffield Park and Garden, in particular a moment when I was wondering though the woods of the park.

It was a magical place for me. I was all alone and there wasn’t a soul, or human soul to precise around. It was extremely peaceful and joyous, I treasured every second being there and admiring the beauty and sounds.

I wanted to try and recreate these sounds and transform them into my own musical interpretation, hopefully letting the listener feel like they are in the forest.

You buy and download the album tomorrow from my Bandcamp page (available on other music platforms for the 9th Jan 2022).

Track 1. – Forest – When you walk into a woodlands there is a feeling, to me least that you are entering another world. Maybe it’s growing up in a city environment that makes me feel this way. With this track I wanted to try a representation of that feeling.

Track 2 – The Falling Leaf – There is something very graceful as a leaf falls from the tree, it floats in the wind and gently hits the ground.

Track 3 – Medeina – Who’s Medeina? I like myths and the idea of places, environments having they own god or spiritual being, like Roman or Greek gods. Medeina is from Lithuanian mythology and said to be the ruler of forests, trees, and animals. I choose Medeina because i think its beautiful name and when doing some research Medeina was perfect for what I was trying to imagine and wanted to create.

Track 4 – Tree Of Many Years – I’m struck by how old some trees can be and I wanted to create a piece music that might represent grandeur but also wisdom.

Track 5 – Sunbeams Through Leaves – When walking under a tree and look up the sunlight shining through the leaves is an incredible sight, a work art in its own right and I find the tones, colours truly mesmeric.

Track 6 – Green World – This As mentioned in the description of the open track Forest, I like the feeling that I’m entering another world when going to a forest or anywhere away from city life and into nature. With Green World I wanted finish where I started and create sounds of forest but try capture that joyous feeling of that environment.
